This paper deals with the question: how the experience of other vocational education and training systems can India help overcome its competence gap. Comparative research has shown that it is possible for lessons to be learned from the reform initiatives of other countries without their mistakes being replicated. An increased involvement of the private sector should boost the quality of the current vocational education and training system. Involving the private sector in vocational training has been successful in many other countries, especially in Germany, where the strategy is seen as underpinning skills training for young people that reflects the needs of the market and helps integrate them successfully into employment.Keywords

Majority of Indian workers are part of the so-called informal economy. Government of India aims to improve the education system for young Indians so that they may have better chances to enter the formal economy. Since it is a long way until the Indian economy will be able to absorb the large number of school leavers, it is also important to target workers in the informal economy and improve their living conditions. It is essential to understand how informal workers currently learn. This paper analyses these learning processes by means of a case study of a group of small-scale mechanics in two semi-urban regions in South India. The study is based on qualitative interviews with informal workers, and seeks to bring out the perspective of the mechanics themselves.References
